Year In Review: Jumping on the cloud computing bandwagon

Hype around cloud computing reached a peak in 2008, with numerous vendors embracing the technology and touting its benefits. Amazon Web Services evangelist Jeff Bar even coined the phrase "cloudbursting" to explain how cloud computing can be used to periodically manage an organization's peak loads without actually putting the entire infrastructure to the cloud.

EMC buys parts of SourceLabs to bolster cloud strategy

In an attempt to bolster EMC's cloud computing business, the storage vendor has acquired assets from SourceLabs, a maker of support and management tools for Linux and open source software.

Cloud Computing in Plain English

Yesterday I received a Christmas e-Card from rPath, which specializes in virtualization, virtual appliances and cloud computing. The card contained an invitation to view a video titled, "Cloud Computing in Plain English." Being a sucker for videos, I gave it a spin. It was pretty amusing and remarkably informative, all in less than five minutes.

A year in the clouds

If there was one big trend in 2008 -- and by that we mean the buzz phrase on the lips of every analyst and vendor -- it was cloud computing. As with all new IT trends, levels of adoption were low. But adoption of what, exactly? The most interesting thing about cloud computing is that arguments over its definition continue to rage even as customers pay actual money for it.
